Van Hire Purchase (HP): How It Works

Updated . General information, not financial advice.

Hire purchase (HP) is the most straightforward way to finance a van you want to own. You pay a deposit, then fixed monthly payments, and the van is yours once the last payment is made. It’s available to private buyers, sole traders and limited companies.

In short

With van hire purchase, you pay a deposit and fixed monthly payments covering the full price plus interest, and you own the van at the end. There’s no mileage limit and no large final payment. VAT-registered businesses can usually reclaim the VAT, which is normally paid upfront.

What is van hire purchase?

HP works the same way for vans as for cars. The lender buys the van and you pay for it in instalments. The lender owns it until you’ve made every payment, then ownership passes to you. Because you’re paying off the whole price, monthly payments are higher than with lease purchase, but you pay less interest overall.

How van HP works step by step

  1. Choose the van and agree the price.
  2. Pay a deposit. This might be cash or your old van in part-exchange. For a business, the VAT is often paid upfront at this stage.
  3. Agree a term, usually between two and five years.
  4. Make fixed monthly payments covering the amount borrowed plus interest.
  5. Own the van after the final payment and any small option to purchase fee.

Total you pay: £28,891, including £4,891 interest.

Based on the worked example on this page: £24,000 van, 48 months at an illustrative 10.9% APR. Ignores VAT and fees. Not a quote.

Worked example

A van costs £24,000 (excluding VAT). You pay a £2,400 deposit and borrow £21,600 over 48 months at an illustrative APR of 10.9%. Your monthly payment would be about £551.89, and the total you’d pay, including the deposit, would be about £28,891. These figures ignore VAT and fees and are not a quote.

Pros and cons of van HP

Pros

  • You own the van at the end, with no large final payment
  • No mileage limit, which suits high-mileage work
  • Less interest overall than lease purchase
  • You can sign-write, rack out or modify the van, though check the lender’s terms first

Cons

  • Higher monthly payments than lease purchase or leasing
  • On a business HP agreement, VAT is usually due upfront
  • You carry the risk of the van’s value falling
  • You don’t own the van until the last payment

VAT and tax on van HP

If your business is VAT-registered and uses the van for business, you can usually reclaim the VAT on the van’s price. On HP, VAT is normally charged upfront rather than spread across the payments, so you’ll need to fund it at the start and reclaim it on your VAT return. Interest on the agreement may also be an allowable business expense. Tax rules have conditions, so check with your accountant.

Your rights on a van HP agreement

If you’re a private buyer, sole trader or small partnership, your HP agreement is usually regulated by the Consumer Credit Act. That gives you the right to settle early and, once you’ve paid half of the total amount payable, to end the agreement by voluntary termination. Agreements with limited companies, and some business agreements over £25,000, aren’t regulated, so these rights depend on the contract. See business or personal: why it matters.

Is van HP right for you?

Van HP may suit you if you want to own the van, drive high mileage or plan to keep it for years. It may suit you less if the monthly payments would squeeze your cash flow, in which case lease purchase or leasing could spread the cost differently.

Van HP FAQs

Can a limited company take out van HP?

Yes. Lenders will usually ask for company accounts and business bank statements, and may ask a director for a personal guarantee if the company is new.

Is there a mileage limit on van HP?

No. Because you’re paying for the whole van, there’s no mileage limit. High mileage will still reduce what the van is worth when you sell it.

Can I reclaim VAT on the monthly payments?

Usually not. On HP, VAT is normally charged on the van’s price upfront rather than on each payment. A VAT-registered business can usually reclaim that upfront VAT, subject to how the van is used.
